Seakingen

Nearly all children growing up around here, Honningsvåg in Finnmark - Norway, knows the helicopter Sea King. Even before they learn any english they know the name "Seakingen". The name comes from the helicoter type, Westland Sea King. Though everyone up here just call it "Seakingen". So quite a few children might not understand the connection to the english words sea and king...

"Seakingen" is operated by the Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNAF) as a search and rescue tool. The helicopter is military, but performs many tasks for the civil society. The entire norwegian coast has coverage by the search and rescue service of the RNAF, and by many the helicopter is not really considered as military because of it's tasks to rescue civilians during peace. Many seamen have been rescued by "Seakingen".

These photos were taken at Honningsvåg airport - Valan, 29th of June 2007. The occasion was the 30th anniversary of the airport. The Sea King helicopter came from Banak Air Station to show off and perform a small excercise.
